A Brighter, Greener Future

Thanks to the generous support from the Rampion Community Benefit Fund at Sussex Community Foundation, we have been able to install solar panels on the roof of our warehouse in Brighton, directly powering our operations. The electricity generated will help fuel our industrial walk-in chiller, office spaces, and the charging units for our electric delivery vans. This means that our surplus food redistribution efforts will now be even more environmentally friendly!

Why Solar?

With energy costs rising significantly, our electricity bill for one of our units increased by 303% from 2022/23 to 2023/24, so switching to solar is both a financially and environmentally sound decision. Over the next 20 years, we anticipate becoming 33.9% self-sufficient in our energy needs, reducing our reliance on traditional power sources and cutting down our overhead costs. Every penny saved on energy bills is a penny redirected towards rescuing more surplus food and feeding those in need.

The 32 solar panels on unit 4 will supply us with 13,000 kilowatt hours of energy. That’s the equivalent energy needed to charge our e-vans 147 times!

Sustainability in Action

This project is more than just an energy saving initiative, it’s a long term investment in the environment and our community. Last year we made the switch to 100% renewable energy providers for both of our sites. Now with solar energy in Brighton to partially charge our electric fleet and power our chiller more sustainably, we’re actively reducing carbon emissions and embracing cleaner and greener energy solutions. As an organisation that prevents food waste while tackling food insecurity, this project aligns perfectly with our mission of social and environmental impact.
