“Food costs have risen by 37.2% since March 2020.”
Here is a message from Dan Slatter, the CEO of FareShare Sussex & Surrey, on the rising costs of food:
UK inflation may be heading in the right direction but food costs are still feeling costly! Food inflation is still climbing and continues to defy the general trend at 4.9% in October, that is double the Bank of England target. Sadly, this means for shoppers that the cost of healthy staples including vegetables, fish, bread and cereals rose. However, there was a small mercy, a slight reduction in the inflation of fruit!
The October statistics show what people have been feeling for the last ten months, that food prices have been increasing faster than predictions. The bigger picture shows even more concerning stats with total food costs having risen by 37.2% from March 2020 to September 2025. This ongoing inflation highlights the importance of FareShare Sussex & Surrey’s work. By rescuing and redistributing perfectly good surplus food to over 250 charities, we estimate that we have saved our charity members £16.5 million in food costs in the last year.
With food inflation continuing to exceed general inflation, the cost savings, value proposition and social impact of FareShare Sussex & Surrey will only continue to climb.
