As we embark on 2025 we wanted to give you a flavour of what is on our horizon for the first quarter of the year at FareShare Sussex & Surrey.

This time of year is always the most challenging in terms of surplus food volumes in our Warehouses. We call it our ‘hunger gap’ which is predominantly caused by the limitation of what vegetables grow in the UK at the coldest, darkest point of the year. Nationally and regionally our food supply teams work really hard to fill this gap so we can keep the supply consistent for our charities and community groups. A prime example of this is the sourcing of a large volume of venison that will be coming in this quarter. Venison is a wild, abundant, and very lean protein that we will be distributing alongside a range of simple but delicious recipe ideas.

Later in January, we will be getting dressed up as Lord Bassam of Brighton hosts a reception at the House of Lords to celebrate the work of FareShare Sussex & Surrey. This is a wonderful opportunity to continue to lobby the government for key legislative changes that will unlock more surplus food and save it from being wasted.

We are hard at work behind the scenes to add a new, large HGV to our fleet to work across the region. This new large lorry will enable us to respond faster to larger offers of surplus and further reduce our food miles, so keep your eyes peeled for our huge green lorry in the springtime!

This quarter will also see us take another sizable step forward in reducing our carbon footprint. Solar PV panels will be installed on the depot roof in Brighton over the coming weeks, thanks to the generosity of Rampion Community Benefit Fund of Sussex Community Foundation.

Get in touch today if you have surplus food that you want to donate, and join the movement that is reducing food waste for environmental and social good.
