Venison

we are taking part in a pilot venison project

In January 2024 FareShare Sussex & Surrey joined up with local conservations projects to make the most of Venison. The new pilot scheme that we are trialling with Natural England will see 2 tonnes of minced venison being donated to FareShare Sussex & Surrey in the first part of the year.

Our partner, Natural England, is actively reducing the deer population at an SSSI site (site of special scientific interest) in our region, where the overpopulation is causing extensive damage to the biodiversity.

This overpopulation is due to:

  • A lack of clear government legislation to control numbers
  • Covid, which made it harder to control the population growth
  • A falling number of land managers
  • The expense of meat during the cost of living crisis

Venison mince can be used like beef, it is a highly nutritious and ultra-lean meat.  We are excited to be able to offer this great protein to your clients. This project is a pilot and if successful, we hope to extend the project to provide an annual supply of venison.
